Hike in the Drakensberg Mountains, experience Zulu Culture, go on safari in Hluhluwe Game Reserve as well as in Sabi Sands Game Reserve and soak up the sun on the palm fringed beaches of Vilanculos in Mozambique. In South Africa you travel by hire car, while Mozambique is a fly-in package.

Itinerary 20 day self-drive & fly-in tour:

Day 1: Johannesburg

Arrive at OR Tambo Airport and take the shuttle to your hotel, at only 10 minutes from the airport.

Day 2-4: Drakensberg Mountains         

The rental car will be delivered to your hotel. Travel south to the impressive Drakensberg Mountains well known for the fantastic hiking options it offers The Northern Part of Drakensberg hides the Royal Natal National Park with its intriguing and astonishing amphitheatre: it is 8km long, flanked by 2 mountain peaks: the Sentinel (3165 m) and the Eastern Butress (3047m). In between the Tugela Falls, the second highest waterfall in the world, makes it way down. Discover and explore these mountain secrets by foot, by horse or on a mountain bike.

Day 5 & 6: Zululand

From the impressive mountains you travel deeper inland. Your next lodge is a stone's throw away from the historically momentous Anglo-Zulu battlefields of Rorke's Drift and 
Isandlwana, where Zulu and British clashed in a devastating battle which had enormous consequences for the Zulu people. Learn about the Zulu culture and traditions as they remain in Zululand today and enjoy the natural surroundings.

Day 7 & 8: Hluhluwe Game Reserve

Make your way to the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park in the northern Kwazulu-Natal and an impressive combination of hilly areas, deciduous forests and tall grasslands. Once the hunting ground of the legendary Zulu king, Shaka; now it offers 30,000 hectares of pristine wilderness. The park is famous for bringing the white rhino population back from the very brink of extinction. Enjoy 2 days of game drives with your own ranger from the only private lodge in the reserve.

Day 9 & 10: Swaziland

Enjoy a final morning game drive with your ranger followed by a nice breakfast. Leave the park behind and cross the border with Swaziland. Swaziland is a diminutive kingdom, embedded between South Africa and Mozambique. The Kingdom is small in size but offers a wide range of possibilities; mountain biking, walking trails, rafting, bird watching, horseback riding, canopy tour ....take your pick! Swaziland offers picturesque scenery, friendly people and lovely handmade arts and crafts.

Day 11: Kruger National Park

Cross back into South Africa and enter the famous Kruger National Park. Today you self-drive through the park. Stop for all the game you see such as rhino, elephant, impala and warthog. Don’t get out of your car, this is wild territory! Overnight at one of the rest camps in the middle of the park, safely fenced in and with the sound of hyena and lion in the background.

Day 12-14: Sabi Sands Game Reserve

The renowned Sabi Sands Game Reserve is your home for the next days in the bush. The reserve has many resident leopard and lion and the changes of seeing one are good. Together with your ranger you set out on morning and afternoon game drives to explore the bush and find the game. The lodge is your luxury home where you can relax, get pampered and enjoy delicious meals.

Day 15: Hazyview

Get up early for your last game drive today in Sabi Sands Game Reserve. Travel only a short distance to your next destination, Hazyview, the gateway to the Panorama Route. Explore this spectacular area with its overwhelming natural beauty with Gods Window, Blyde River Canyon and Mac Mac Falls to name but a few of the highlights.

Day 16-19: Vilanculos, Mozambique

Drive to Nelspruit where you hand in your car at the airport. Fly directly from Nelspruit to Vilanculos in Mozambique. The next 4 days are all about sun, sea and seafood!
Enjoy wonderful days at the Bahia Mar Boutique Hotel, right on the beach. You have the choice of just relaxing and enjoying wellness treatments at the hotel or go out and be more active. Book a cruise on a traditional Mozambican Dhow or join an island excursions to Bazaruto Island, one of the best places for snorkelling and scuba diving. Shop at local markets, sample Mozambican food and enjoy the local culture.

Day 20: Johannesburg

Time to say goodbye to sunny Mozambique. Fly from Vilanculos to Johannesburg and connect with your flight home.
